Can you have too many shoes?

Can you have too many shoes?

I usually start my speaking engagements with asking this simple question.  I get quite a reaction – usually laughter and lots of YESES!

I often see shoes that make me feel sad –

  • Maybe a little worn & forgotten at the back of wardrobes to deteriorate & get dusty?
  • Maybe they no longer fit or were never comfortable but we keep them because they cost a lot?
  • Maybe they were from a previous stage in our lives, e.g. part of our professional attire but with retirement are no longer part of our everyday wardrobe
  • Occasionally I see piles of shoes that have been neglected for years and deteriorated to such a state that they have melted together – I call this a “shoe orgy”!

Shoes are a great way for us to start thinking about what we have and whether we hold on to items too long.

If you are having trouble decluttering and letting stuff go, often it is helpful to pick one item (such as shoes) to get your thinking on track –

  • How much space do I have for shoes?
  • Realistically how many pairs do I need?
  • What are Functional (what I still wear)?
  • What are Favourites (must keeps, maybe wedding shoes, special occasion shoes)
  • What are Farewells (will I ever wear again)?
    • What can I donate?
    • What are past their use-by-date & should be tossed?

Once you have decided what shoes to keep, you can then focus on how best to organize them for your use – importantly, as we age having our shoes at the bottom of the wardrobe can be challenging –

  • Maybe take the time to think about the functionality of your wardrobe?
  • Do you need to make some layout changes?
  • Would some shelving or drawers help rather than having to bend down for your shoes?

What we own should be an accessory to our lives, not take our time looking for and organising

Have fun and enjoy your shoes …
